It was my first ever visit to Oh! Calcutta. I have been wanting to go there since I first tried Bengali food somewhere in Pune. As this restaurant has opened up in Cyber hub, so I decided to visit it. The complete decor is soo bengali. You can see small drawings on the glass as you enter and pictures on the walls from Bollywood. It has a distinct retro feel to it. The servers were very polite as well as helpful in deciding what to order. They were able to explain as well as suggest things properly. I have a friend who has been born and brought up in Kolkata. Thanks to her, it was easy to decide what to order as she knows my taste plus I could try the specialities of Bengali food.
We ordered Bekti Machher Paturi and Nizami murg kabab as starters. Bekti Maccher Paturi is basically steamed fish, carefully wrapped in a banana leaf. As you open the leaf, you can so easily smell the mustard. It tasted strongly of mustard. The fish was really soft and well cooked. The nizami murg kababs were grilled chicken breast pieces on a stick (like a chicken satay). Both the starters were not very spicy, although these were perfectly cooked. There were 3 dips that were served with the starters. One was based on curd, other on tomatoes and the third one was a mustard sauce. I loved the curd based dip and of course the mustard sauce was the best I have ever had.
For main course, we ordered Kosha Mangsho and Luchis. Luchis are basicaly mini form of bhaturas. There were 6 loochhis in one serving. Kosha was something like a mutton korma. It was really really appetizing but too heavy on the stomach.
We decided to order Date palms ice cream and Mishti Doi for desserts. That ice cream was something like I had never had before. It was delicious and so was Mishti doi (sweet curd) which was served in a kulhad. I am certainly planning on visiting again sometime just for the desserts. The whole experience was excellent.
Verdict: Must try once. Do not miss the deserts!!
